Jan Lyall’s Story

Jan Lyall Wildlife Photography

In 2007 I decided upon retirement that photography would be a better option than crossword puzzles. I had always taken happy snaps of our travels and family events but now it was time to get serious about learning some skills. My first Kodak Duraflex was gifted to me at 18 and has pride of place on the shelf with a few others.

I have always been passionate about the beauty that surrounds us but felt capturing it in a way that resonates with the viewer would perhaps help others see a little differently too.

Travel has been a huge piece of our life adventures, having now visited nearly 70 countries. Beyond the obvious landscapes and cityscapes it is the local people and their customs that intrigue and educate. The more we may be different the more similar we all are. I have a love of capturing the small

stories unfolding on the streets of the cities and villages, embracing having people in the images rather than avoiding them. The learning journey is forever fulfilling.

I'm a proud Mom to two exceptionally successful children and proud wife of one of the kindest, most photogenic guys to be in front of my lens. The most joy is that time of year when all six of us travel together often to Asian countries. India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia come to mind.

Mentors are an important part of our lives and I have been privileged to have many along the way, in my 10 year nursing career, my 40 years as a real estate broker and now in photography. Top of the list for the latter are the talented Dave Brosha, Paul Zizka, David Duchemin, Wayne Simpson, Steve Simon, Wendy Parkin and more.

Navigating through Jan’s images, I am taken to a world that we live in every day but seldom see.

Jan captures moments in time and places that few people see or experience. Her love of travel, mixed

with her incredible photographic skill, and thirst for traditions and culture has allowed her to create a lifetime of amazing pictures of the world!

How do I describe Jan’s style? Actually I can’t …… which really is a testament to a true artist.

She is an observer of life in all forms. The characters she captures reminds me of a great portrait artist, yet her wildlife and landscape photographs are stunning. Her street photography reflects the character and livelihoods of people and places from all over the world.

From the first time I met Jan it was evident that she was special and a real inspiration to all. Her encouragement and zest for life make those who know her envious and inspired! She continually challenges herself, is always furthering her skills, and continues to travel the world to bring back images to inspire and awe!

It has been my pleasure to learn from Jan and share many photographic opportunities together since meeting 6 years ago. Thank you for sharing these extraordinary images with the world and for becoming a treasured friend!
